80 degree holidays

happy new year, everyone!  i hope you all had a wonderful holiday season full of friends, family, and good food.  i know i sure did!

to begin, i must set up the story.  this begins way back in november, at thanksgiving...
my dear friend jenna and her lovely parents joined my family for a thanksgiving feast at my house this year.  jenna had come from texas and her parents came all the way from ohio.  thanksgiving night, jenna and i had a sleepover at at her hotel in santa monica and spent the next day frolicking around the city.  as our frolicking came to a close, we started our walk back to the hotel and came upon a pile of trash left by some careless hobo, no doubt (it's santa monica).

amongst the pieces of debris, i spotted a diamond in the rough!  an abandoned glove!  hurray!  but aw.. gross.. santa monica glove.  thankfully, i was carrying two bags because i had bought christmas cards and a birthday present for my mom that day.  i consolidated my purchases into the larger bag and used the smaller one to pick up and store the glove on its journey.

fast forward to christmastime.  my good friend marken is back from new york city for the holidays and we are at knott's berry farm with her mom, meg, and our friend beeta.  why are we at knott's?  for a craft fair, duh!  (what?)  well, we are walking around this craft fair, unimpressed with the knick knacks and various homemade crap.  i heave a sigh, expecting to leave the fair empty-handed, when i see a glove relaxing on the floor in a doorway!  yay!  i had no tissues or baggies to pick it up with, so this time i just sucked it up and picked it up with my bare hands and held it daintily between two fingers until i located some paper towels to wrap it in.

fast forward again to 2012 and after the holiday hubbub, i have time to sit down and make some glove dolls.  these two are fairly straightforward and i know right away what i want to form them into.  the santa monica glove is a plain black knit glove but the thumb lends itself so nicely into a long nose.  the knott's glove has cute rubber polka dots on the palm, so i want to highlight that feature.  the pinky and thumb fingers become arms and the wrist hole becomes a mouth.

please welcome 2012's first glove dolls:

intelli-gent

hey yous guys!  first off, i'd like to wish you a happy and healthy new year.  2011 is gonna be a great year, i just know it.  i am pleased to report that my year has gotten off to a beautiful start!

just a few days ago, i saw two gloves within two miles of my house.  another tragedy, of course, for both were in the middle of a busy street and doomed to stay there until being picked up by a gust of wind or a sticky truck wheel.  after frowny-facing for a while i got over it, because life is good and there are other gloves to be had.

two days ago, i was at the pepperdine west LA campus for class.  i was heading down a ramp in the parking structure when i noticed a little black thing on the pavement.  i didn't pay it any mind since i was keen on finding a parking space and getting to class on time.  after class, i hopped in my car and started up the ramp again, glanced sideways at the black being, and drove on.  but wait, was that a thumb i saw?  could it have been a glove?  i had to be sure.  quickly finding an empty spot, i pulled in and hopped out of the car with the motor still running.  oh glee, it was a glove!  a fine specimen, too!  it looked so clean and well-kept, nothing like the greasy gardening gloves i've been finding as of late.

i joyfully snatched up the glove and got back in the car, placing the glove gingerly on my passenger seat.  when i home, i inspected the glove to determine how best to handle it.
to my surprise, the glove was from nordstrom and 100% cashmere!  a beauty like that had to be handled with care, but i wasn't about to shell out the big bucks just to dry clean one glove.  instead, i hand-washed it in cold water and hung it up to line dry.

the glove had a long wrist and a ruffle at the cuff, so i removed the ruffle and fashioned it into a mohawk (i want one so badly).  instead of making the wrist into legs, i decided it would be appropriate to make a glove with an enormous cranium to house an enlarged brain, since i found the glove at a place of education.  the fingers form two arms, two legs, and one long nose.  the tag transformed into a tie to make the glove presentable and interview-ready.

he's one smart cookie, he's one good-lookie.  meeeeet....

21 December 2010

rain rainy rain

after a long dry-spell the rains finally came.  and they weren't joking, neither!  it's been for four or five days straight now.  and you know what rain means?  yes, raincoats, rainboots, umbrellas, and GLOVES.

i was driving to the gym the other day and spotted a glove on the side of the road.  it was within the curbside parking boundaries, which means it would be safe to retrieve the glove (and wouldn't be going against my pact with my parents not to risk my life to rescue gloves).  since i had already driven past the glove and was already on my way to the gym, i scribbled "GLOVE" on the back of my hand to remember to pick it up on the way home.
which i did.

it was a super dirty gardening/work glove, so i left it on the stone wall in the front yard in hopes that the rain would take care of some of the cleaning.  i was wrong, it made no difference whatsoever.  so after a day outside in the rain, i brought the glove inside for a thorough bath.  into the bathroom sink with some detergent and vigorous scrubbing.  still dirty.  ok, how about some bleach then?  oh god it smells.  oh and the plug is stuck so the sink won't drain.  lovely.  so here i am with a dirty glove in bleachy water that won't drain, and now my hands smell like bleach.  thankfully, dad happened to call just then and was able to tell me how to fix the sink.. huzzah!

once clean and dry, i spent some time peeling off the cracked rubber that lined the inside of the glove.  the leather is so old and stiff that i was not able to mold it into anything, but i wasn't about to let this poor little guy down.  i spaced his button eyes far apart to make him look dopey and gave him some snaggle teeth.  he ain't too pretty but he's loyal to a fault.

give a warm holiday welcome to Klaus!
merry christmas and happy new year, everyone!
