quadruplasplosion

ladies and gents, i canNOT believe how long it has been since i've last posted.  it's absurd!  abhorrent!  abnormal!  absolutely unacceptable!  so to make it up to you, i will give you the most glove action you've ever seen here on this blog.

not one,
not two,
not even three,
but FOUR GLOVES!  in one post!

well, i know what you're thinking.  you're saying to yourself, "that liz, she so crazy... how she got four gloves lying around anyhow?"  well, i'd tell you why... but i don't exactly know.  alls i knows is that i found the first dubglove several months back but was unable to turn it into a glove doll because i had no free time whatsoever because i was teaching full-time.  now that i have a little bit o' extra time, i can do fun things like rehabbing lost gloves.  so i apologize at not having photo of the first pair where i actually found them, but i can't for the life of me remember where i found them or if i even took a picture.  i decided that these two gloves, since they were found together, shall travel together all the rest of their days.  i chose to create a rider and his vehicle.  well, without further ado, here's the first pair!

say hi to...  Gianwayne and his faithful Steed!

the second pair of gloves i found just yesterday when wandering the streets of santa monica with one of my best friends and old college roommate, jessica.  i picked her up after she was done with her workly duties and parked my car in one of the many parking structures available in the area.  as soon as we exited the structure, we walked right by two beautiful black knit gloves.

we had to stop for a photo, obviously!  upon further inspection, i discovered that they are the kind of gloves with little flaps for the forefinger and thumb that you can secure back with a button if you need to use touch-screens.  someone totally messed up by losing these babies!  i REALLY lucked out this time!

i decided to remove the thumb and index finger flaps and save them for feet.  i stuffed one entire glove to make a body and attached the feet on the bottom.  i cut the wrist off of the other glove and made a large nose out of it.  the rest of the fingers of the second glove form the remainder of the "comb" on the back of the body.  i think it looks a little bit like a cross between woodstock and snoopy... now wouldn't THAT be a weird couple??

please welcome...

lub dub, luv gluv

summah tiiimmeee and the weather ain’t freeeezyyyy...
that’s right, it’s summer!  which means no school!  which means free time!
and i have more good news: i’m done with grad school in less than two weeks, so give me a high-five if you see me around.

i found this pair of gloves in may when i took two weeks off from student teaching high school to student teach at a local middle school.  i would smile all the way to school every morning.  whoever says middle school is a terrible place has never visited this place!  i’ve never been so happy to be around 6th graders!

driving home one day, i spotted a glimpse of red on the roadside.  being me, i immediately pulled over to check to see if was a glove.  it wasn’t a glove.  it was TWO gloves!  hot damn!  i picked them up, skipped back to my car, and grinned all the way home.  two months later, on summer break, i have finally finished the glove doll.

it was so fortunate to find two red gloves, since the majority of gloves i find are neutral in color or leather work gloves.  i decided to take advantage of the color by creating a glove doll that resembled the shape of the human heart.  the stubby fingers look a little like arteries.  to mix things up a little, i put snaps on two of the fingers.  they are fun to snap together and pull apart.

hens, glovans, countrymen, lend me your ears!  last month in may, i went up to davis for the whole earth festival.  for those of you that have been following since the beginning of lonesome glove, you will remember that this blog started in davis, california!  it was great to be back in my old college town, especially during springtime.  i had hopes that i might find a glove while up there, and thankfully, i did!  after spending three glorious days in davis at the festival, i was preparing to return to reality.  thankfully, before i left, i found TWO gloves on 3rd street near crepeville.  i clutched the dirty, leafy gloves in my left hand for quite a long time while strolling around downtown.  finally, i stopped in miskha's cafe to get a coffee and a brown paper bag to deposit the gloves in.  the gloves flew back down to los angeles with me and waited patiently for their turn to be rehabbed.  a month later, after i finished student teaching, i finally had time to address the two gloves!

they started off as two black fingerless gloves (the previous owner had cut off the fingers!  how cruel!).  i sewed the finger holes shut, stuffed the gloves, and attached them at the wrist to create a very tall chicken-y form.  one thumb and forefinger stuck out and looked a little bit like a beak, so i sewed them together into a pouty-chicken-kissy-face.  cuuuuuuuuuuute!  cluck.

the cross-street where meg found the glove
this glove comes from my best friend’s mother, meg.  meg is absolutely amazing and lovely.  she is a fantastic glove-spotter and i can't thank her enough for supporting this blog.  thanks, meg!  well, one evening meg stopped by unexpectedly.  when i answered the door, i saw her standing on the porch holding a box.  i immediately knew what was in it.  i ushered her inside, gave her a huge hug, and eagerly took the box from her.  i opened the box to find a small black glove covered in leaves and other foliage.  it was accompanied by a blue beaded mardi gras necklace meant for my mother.  the glove was from... you guessed it!  mardi gras!  what a party glove!  i honestly cannot imagine what sights this glove has seen or what debauchery it has been a part of.  accordingly, i decided i must make it a playful glove.

thuh gluv on da gound
after cutting off the thumb (gasp!) and sewing up the side, i stuffed the glove and sewed the wrist part into a mouth.  i originally wanted to make the thumb into bewbs, but later decided against it.  instead, the thumb became a tongue, sticking out of the mouth, taunting and teasing any passersby.  perhaps the tongue hangs out because the glove has caught sight of a mardi gras honey trying to get some beads?  perhaps not.  either way, he/she (i couldn't tell!) has turned into quite the swinger.

please welcome...

LECH!
lech and teddy making eyes at you.

P.S. meg gives her commentary on lech:
"Lech is wonderful. I especially love it's tongue. And by the way, we couldn't tell either. I think the whole Mardi Gras experience had gotten the best of Lech. It was about 3:00pm on Fat Tuesday when it was found. I'm sure it had been ...partying for 4 straight days. I'm not surprised that Lech's mouth is now in a frozen state of retching. In all honesty, I have to tell you that Dick is the one who found Lech. I had our whole family on the lookout. They will be glad to know how well things turned out for the little glove. Now I'm getting teary..."

SPRING BREEEAAAKKKKK

i apologize for my extended absence.  the past few months have been busy with grad school and student teaching.  buttttt i will not bore you with those things.  instead, why don't we talk of spring?  the flowers are blooming, people are sneezing, claritin never had so many admirers.  life is grand!

so you know what spring means?  SPRING BREEEAAAKKKKK!!  which is how i actually have the free time to make a glove doll and then post about it.  oh how i have missed having free time...

glove 1
i found this glove a long time ago when i was driving home from student teaching.  i spotted one glove near the baseball field in the street outside the school and immediately pulled over to snap a picture and grab it.  i hopped in my car with a big grin and kept driving home, only to spot *another* glove just a little ways down the road, near the curb.  by then, i had driven too far to pull over, so i flipped a u-turn (legal?) and headed back up the hill.

glove 2

after maneuvering through the school's parking lot and then driving out the other side, i was able to head back down the hill.  i pulled over again and retrieved the second glove.  it was the mate of the first!  twins!!  i honestly think the two gloves may have belonged to a student that was practicing sports on said baseball field, but who cares, the gloves were MINE!  MUAHHAHHAHAH!!!

several months later, i actually have the time to make the gloves into something awesome. the gloves are sporty, made of leather and some sort of stretchy synthetic, with nice padding in the palm area.  the wrists had elastic bands with a velcro closures.  i decided to cut those off because i've sewn through rubber before, and trust me it's not fun.

so after cutting off the wrists (that sounds terrible), i cut the fingers (OH GOD) off one of the gloves, leaving the palm connected to a thumb.  i sealed the top part of the palm/thumb to create a head with a very long nose.  then i sewed the fingers on top of the head to make a very striking headdress.  after stuffing the second glove and attaching the head, i added button eyes and a pompom nose. i started out thinking it would be a bird, but it ended up more like a moose dog.  i think he's pretty cute, apart from his massively lopsided face (he has an enormous right cheek that i have concealed in this well-posed glamor shot).

enjoy the new post, because i don't know when i'll be able to post again.  i've miss you guys!
and now, i present to you....

Mooseldorf!!

mom-entum

the first part of this post is brought to you by my illustrious mom:

"I was staying at Green Valley Lake with my fellow book club members, having a girl’s weekend away from our families.  The weather was clear, and cold.  We went for a walk around the lake in the morning.  I was in the last group of walkers with Meg.  There was some ice on the lake, and remnants of the last snowfall on the ground.  As we finished our stroll around the lake, and headed into town, I spotted a fuzzy raspberry colored glove in the snow at the side of the road.  I was elated!  At last I found a glove that I could rescue and take home to my daughter.  I took a picture of the glove in situ, and carefully wrapped it up to take home."

when mom got back from her trip and brought in her suitcase, i saw a little gleam in her eye.  she suddenly exclaimed, "i have something for you!"  i started jumping and dancing around the living room in anticipation.  she rifled through her suitcase, pawing through her clothes looking for something.  i started to lose momentum.  she wasn't sure where it was.  she could have sworn she packed it.  did she forget it?  noooooooooooooooooo!  but wait!  it was in the front pocket of the suitcase all along.  ha ha ha!  phew.  0_o

ok, onto the crafty bit.  (i know you were waiting for this part.)  today i went to michael's arts and crafts store to get more buttons and fiberfill.  i bought three large bags of fiberfill so i won't run out for quite a while.  the new fiberfill is softer and more pliable than my last batch, so i super-duper stuffed the glove to make it puffy.  i decided it looked a little bit like a squid, so i turned it upside down and closed up the wrist at the top.  i was watching futurama at the time so i had cyclops on the brain.  one giant button later, and my squid became a cyclosquid.  the thumb made a nice nose, and i secured it with some thread so that it would stay erect (heehee).  after that, i made a smiley face with thread.  but it felt like something was missing.  i pondered for a bit and realized the cyclosquid needed some unwieldy large teeth, so i sewed on four of those.  then i remembered the leather label, "possumdown" that i had removed earlier.  i found a suitable location for the label on the cyclosquid's rump, like a license plate.  he's rather silly, but oh so squishy.

here you can see him in his natural knitted seascape environment:

unprecedented. unpresidented?

ladies and gentlemittens, i have great news!  for the first time ever, i have four lonesome gloves in my care at one time!  i am going a bit backwards and making the most recently acquired glove doll first, but i will get to the other three, don’t you worry.

now onto the story.  my dad got a call earlier this evening from my best friend’s mom, meg.  dad said meg was on her way over to our house to drop something off.  i thought nothing of it, since she’s in book club with my mom and those ladies are always borrowing books from each other.  five minutes later, we hear teddy bark his warning, and i open the door to find meg standing there holding a small white box.  she presents me with the box and tells me it’s the “little guy” she found in the mountains (the book club had just been up to big bear and i gave my mom firm instructions to rescue any gloves she or her friends came across).

i opened the lid to reveal a child’s black snow glove and a few cotton balls in the box that meg said were to keep it from going hungry.  how thoughtful!!

after meg departed, i immediately set to work.  i had trouble stuffing the glove since it, being a child’s glove, was very tiny and difficult to fit my hands in.  however, after a decent amount of struggling, i managed to stuff the fingers and palm of the glove with fiberfill (the polyester stuffing that i use to stuff my gloves).  i ran out of fiberfill once i reached the wrist part of the glove, so i resorted to using cotton balls.  i guess one might say this glove is 60% polyester and 40% cotton?

i gave the glove little legs in case he wants to ski or snowboard, a snazzy bejeweled belt, and two little antennae to pick up radio stations even way up in the mountains.

please give a warm fuzzy welcome to,

Handsel!

intelli-gent

hey yous guys!  first off, i'd like to wish you a happy and healthy new year.  2011 is gonna be a great year, i just know it.  i am pleased to report that my year has gotten off to a beautiful start!

just a few days ago, i saw two gloves within two miles of my house.  another tragedy, of course, for both were in the middle of a busy street and doomed to stay there until being picked up by a gust of wind or a sticky truck wheel.  after frowny-facing for a while i got over it, because life is good and there are other gloves to be had.

two days ago, i was at the pepperdine west LA campus for class.  i was heading down a ramp in the parking structure when i noticed a little black thing on the pavement.  i didn't pay it any mind since i was keen on finding a parking space and getting to class on time.  after class, i hopped in my car and started up the ramp again, glanced sideways at the black being, and drove on.  but wait, was that a thumb i saw?  could it have been a glove?  i had to be sure.  quickly finding an empty spot, i pulled in and hopped out of the car with the motor still running.  oh glee, it was a glove!  a fine specimen, too!  it looked so clean and well-kept, nothing like the greasy gardening gloves i've been finding as of late.

i joyfully snatched up the glove and got back in the car, placing the glove gingerly on my passenger seat.  when i home, i inspected the glove to determine how best to handle it.
to my surprise, the glove was from nordstrom and 100% cashmere!  a beauty like that had to be handled with care, but i wasn't about to shell out the big bucks just to dry clean one glove.  instead, i hand-washed it in cold water and hung it up to line dry.

the glove had a long wrist and a ruffle at the cuff, so i removed the ruffle and fashioned it into a mohawk (i want one so badly).  instead of making the wrist into legs, i decided it would be appropriate to make a glove with an enormous cranium to house an enlarged brain, since i found the glove at a place of education.  the fingers form two arms, two legs, and one long nose.  the tag transformed into a tie to make the glove presentable and interview-ready.

he's one smart cookie, he's one good-lookie.  meeeeet....
